Wevo materials make state-of-the-art LED lighting systems possible

Whether it’s for automotive head-lights, in greenhouses or for offices and homes, LEDs have gained acceptance in almost all fields of lighting applications. This is because in addition to their low energy consumption, LEDs are also very versatile. However, this often requires integrating additional electrical and electronic components into the LED luminaires. For this purpose, WEVO-CHEMIE GmbH offers tailor-made potting compounds, gels, adhesives and sealants that also satisfy additional requirements such as protection against environmental influences, heat and chemicals.

The demands on lighting are manifold and nowadays go far beyond classical aspects such as safety. Among other things, factors like easy adaptability to ambient conditions, integration into smart applications or the technical possibilities for further development play an important role. State-of-the-art lighting systems, for example, can precisely create the mood people are looking for – whether they are at home, at work or in their car. In greenhouses, plant growth is promoted by creating lighting conditions with specific wavelengths (“horticultural lighting”). On the roads, intelligent lighting systems automatically adapt to approaching vehicles or pedestrians.

Technically, this means that LEDs and electronic components need to be integrated into the luminaire and protected against environmental influences in order to guarantee a long service life. In addition, electrical insulation is another important aspect essential to protect users and electricians from hazards and to avoid short circuits and fires. The development of smart and networked systems, as well as new technologies such as Li-Fi (light fidelity), also demands additional components, including sensors, antennas, transformers, drivers and IoT devices. These are increasingly being integrated directly into the luminaire itself rather than realised as an external component. 

With its tailor-made materials based on polyurethane and silicone, Wevo is actively facilitating these developments in LED lighting systems – and the products can be used in a wide variety of applications (Fig. 1).

Regardless of the application, the use of potting compounds, adhesives and sealants brings benefits in terms of design, the manufacturing process and product longevity, and solves among other things the following challenges that arise with respect to lighting engineering.

CHALLENGE: ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Potting compounds, gels, adhesives and sealants from Wevo can be used both indoors and outdoors. Thanks to special ingredients used in their production, LED luminaires (including LED strips) are reliably protected against environmental influences such as ultraviolet light, humidity, dust or corrosive gases. The materials, which are based on polyurethane and silicone, can be used for interior luminaires as well as for street lamps, architectural lighting or illuminated advertising systems. 

When light sources are used in hazardous or safety-critical environments, such as chemical plants, tunnels or airports, they are subject to high requirements in terms of resistance to a wide range of environmental conditions. These include, for example, chemicals, explosive gases, salt, weather or insects. The use of hydrolysis-resistant and hydrophobic polyols with low hygroscopicity and special UV-resistant isocyanates in the hardener component ensures both reliable protection and electrical insulation even in such cases.

CHALLENGE: FOGGING

For use in automotive headlamps and rear lights, Wevo has developed special adhesives and sealants that prevent both tension-cracks in the housings as well as fogging. To achieve this, the compatibility of the materials with amorphous plastics such as PC and PMMA was adjusted. In addition, they consist of particularly pure and solvent-free raw materials. 
 
CHALLENGE: OPERATING TEMPERATURES

Another challenge are high operating temperatures, as in the case of high-power LED spotlights for theatre stages and closely packed LED luminaires for greenhouse lighting. In these cases, the special heat-conducting potting compounds and gap fillers provide reliable protection for the components and LEDs. Effective heat dissipation from the LED modules to the heat sink and ultimately to the ambient air is ensured by the use of special thermally conductive fillers in the potting compound or thermally conductive paste.

      Silicones from Wevo support the battery market to meet ATEX requirements

      The use of battery systems and stacks has an increasing role to play in many different areas of our lives, whether in the home for energy storage or as the power source in e-mobility applications or in industry. In industrial applications, in particular, specific needs and requirements have to be met – especially regarding the use of battery systems and materials in harsh environments where there is elevated explosion risk. The ATEX Directives set safety standards for devices and materials within the European Union to ensure workers’ protection and safety in these areas. WEVO-CHEMIE GmbH has developed several silicone-based products especially for use in the battery systems produced by SAFT Groupe S.A., meeting ATEX requirements and moreover offering UL94 V-0 approval as well as excellent thermal mitigation properties.

       

      DETAIL

      The areas with higher explosion risks are manifold. Potential applications include environments with flammable mediums or the release or creation of flammable gases and vapour – from paint spraying or fuel and chemical handling stations to workplaces handling fine organic dust, such as wood or paper pulp. Intended to ensure the safety and protection of employees, the ATEX Directives are a set of standards within the European Union for materials and components used in these environments with the goal of lowering the risk of working with equipment used in explosive atmospheres.

      The French manufacturer of batteries and accumulators, SAFT Groupe S.A., a company of TotalEnergies SE, uses WEVOSIL 22006 FL to fulfil the stringent requirements associated with its innovative battery systems and enable their use in environments where ATEX approval is needed. The Wevo product fulfils different purposes in the production process – including potting and encapsulating various electronic components or the whole battery unit.

      WEVOSIL SUITABLE FOR USAGE WITHIN BATTERY SYSTEMS 

      WEVOSIL 22006 FL combines several universal properties, making it suitable for all kinds of applications in the battery field: low viscosity for optimal filling of small cavities and fast filling, low Shore hardness for damping effect, and good mechanical and electrical insulation properties. Moreover, the product not only offers excellent thermal mitigation properties, it is also UL94 V-0 approved and thus plays a large part in ensuring that the battery system meets ATEX requirements. 

      WEVOSIL 22006 FL is one in a series of Wevo’s multi-functional, universal potting materials with added values for various applications. Wevo’s range of silicone systems have undergone verification for many applications and special requirements. These needs expand beyond the requirements of thermal conductivity alone but also towards battery thermal management, thermal runaway and mitigation – the solutions combine high thermal conductivity with low density and good mechanical performance. Silicones from Wevo are available as low viscosity materials for encapsulation or thixotropic materials for potting or gap fill.

      Wevo’s continuous product development addresses future applications in the field of fuel cells, flow batteries, ultracapacitors, electric machines and other high-power electronics within the energy, e-mobility and industrial fields. Moreover, Wevo is working on topics such as longevity, sustainability and recycling, also together with its customers.

          Certified according to EN 45545-2: Wevo products for rail vehicles and railway infrastructure

          The German government is planning for Germany to be climate-neutral by 2045, including the mobility sector. The nation’s railways are to play an important role in achieving this goal. With increasing traffic volumes in both passenger and freight transport, the issue of safety will also play an increasingly important role. In the event of a fire, for example, it must be possible to evacuate the train quickly and prevent or at least slow down the spread of the fire. For this purpose, European test standard EN 45545-2 specifies EU-wide fire protection requirements for the materials and components used in rolling stock. Specially designed potting compounds from WEVO-CHEMIE GmbH meet the highest requirements of this standard and can therefore be used for electrical and electronic components in rail vehicles and railway infrastructure.

          DETAIL

          Plastics are widely used in rail vehicles and railway installations, for example as insulating materials in transformers, capacitors, sensors, relays, insulators, printed circuit boards and batteries. In the event of a fire, the components and materials must meet certain performance levels defined by EN 45545-2. Categorisation into the three “hazard levels” (HL) essentially depends on the hazard that arises during a fire. 

          To this end, the standard takes into account, on the one hand, the operation category of the rail vehicle, which depends on whether the vehicle is travelling on open track or for example mainly in tunnels. In addition, the design category is also relevant as for example a freight wagon requires a lower level of fire protection than a double-deck passenger train. The location of the material or component, the exposed surface of the combustible material and the subsequent application – whether furniture, electrotechnical or mechanical equipment – also play an important role, as dangers may arise in the event of fire from flames, heat, smoke and toxic gases. 

          WEVO POTTING COMPOUNDS MEET HIGH REQUIREMENTS AS SET BY EN 45545-2

          Accredited test institutes have examined the suitability of specially designed Wevo potting compounds for use in rail vehicles and railway infrastructure. Their findings: The polyurethane-based products WEVOPUR 552 FLX and WEVOPUR 67210 FL successfully fulfilled the highest performance level HL3 in requirement sets R22 and R23 (electrotechnical products for interior and exterior use in rail vehicles). Several other products meet performance level HL3 in R23 and HL 2 in R22, including an epoxy resin.

          TARGETED PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT LEADS TO ADDITIONAL BENEFITS

          In order to meet the desired performance levels, Wevo has tested a wide range of formulations and raw materials during product development. “In line with the requirements of the standard, particular attention was paid to achieving a combination of low flammability, low smoke density and low smoke toxicity,” explains Andreas Arlt, Business Development Manager at Wevo. At the same time, in close cooperation with suppliers and OEMs from the world of railway engineering, the thermo-mechanical and dielectric properties have been optimised and easy processability ensured. “Furthermore, we have even realised positive impacts on the mechanical properties by using certain additives,” adds Andreas Arlt. “These include a lower coefficient of thermal expansion, higher tensile strength and higher thermal conductivity.” 

          All products are also self-extinguishing in line with UL 94 V-0. In addition, some polyurethane potting compounds have a United Laboratories (UL)-registered RTI value of between 130 °C and 155 °C – which means they can be used in class B and F insulation systems.

              Custom design and efficient production: Wevo products for automotive lighting systems

              The headlamps and rear lights of passenger cars and commercial vehicles are not only important design elements but, as components of assistance systems, also fulfil increasingly complex functions. To ensure that electrical and electronic components are reliably protected from environmental influences throughout their entire life cycle, the components must be well sealed. The adhesives used play a key role in this: they must meet the requirements for durability and resistance, but must not be visible, especially in the headlamps’ “field of vision”. The increasing use of large and complex components also poses a challenge in production. In order to meet the high quality standards laid down by HELLA GmbH & Co. KGaA for the bonding and sealing of its headlamps and rear lights, WEVO-CHEMIE GmbH has developed products that facilitate both freedom in design and efficient production.

               

              DETAIL

              The developments in the field of intelligent headlamp systems are manifold: functions such as matrix lights, light signatures or dynamic indicators require additional electronics that need to be integrated into the component and protected against environmental factors. The components used – ranging from control electronics to LED drivers – also lead to a shift in the location of the heat sources away from the lamps and the direction in which they radiate to the rear of the headlamps. This means increasing demands on the materials used, which need to be both heat-dissipating and heat-resistant.

              The production process is also more complex, because the value of headlamps and rear lights as key brand identification features is resulting in complex component geometries, especially in the premium segment. To be able to manufacture the components with the desired designs, the adhesives deployed need to be specially adapted to the process; in the majority of cases, off-the-shelf systems are simply unable to satisfy the requirements in terms of viscosity, thixotropy and pot life.

              CUSTOMISED SOLUTIONS FOR BONDING COMPLEX GEOMETRIES 

              As one of the technology leaders in the automotive industry, Hella, based in Lippstadt, Germany, manufactures truly innovative lighting systems. To meet the technical and aesthetic requirements for headlamps and rear lights, the company uses potting and adhesive systems from Wevo. Among other things, Hella works with specially adapted variants of the polyurethane-based WEVOPUR 801 that have been developed in close cooperation between the two companies’ product development departments specifically to fulfil the requirements of the respective components. This results in a number of positive options compared to conventional systems.

              For instance, complex geometries of LED and matrix headlamp systems can be realised by adjusting the reactivity and flow properties of the adhesive systems. WEVOPUR 801 is used close to the headlamps’ visible area or “field of vision” – this demands the perfect combination of low viscosity during application with fast setting and good wetting for downstream processing. The specific circumstances of the design and structure of the headlamps need to be taken into account, while still guaranteeing high process quality with regard to application, adhesion and further processing. On the other hand, cable runs and electronic components at the rear of the headlamps and rear lights are potted. In this case, the system used must above all offer sufficient flowability to prevent bubbles and other inclusions from forming. In addition, modified thixotropies ensure the adhesive does not flow through cavities into the interior of the headlamp. 

              In both of these cases, the subsequent tightness of the seal plays an important role, because the electrical and electronic components must be reliably protected against environmental influences. The moisture and gas tightness of the lamp housing is also of ever greater importance, because unlike halogen or xenon headlamps, the illuminants in LED headlamps no longer heat up the headlamp lens; this can lead to condensation or even icing-up inside the headlamp if air or moisture is able to ingress the lamp unit. Potential fallout: the headlamp can “go blind”! Furthermore, the Wevo solutions have been optimised in terms of their thermal conductivity and heat resistance so that the heat losses of the illuminants can be dissipated to the lamp housing, ensuring the lamps’ long-term functionality.

              REAR LIGHT STRIPS – A PRODUCTION CHALLENGE

              Another trend, especially in the premium segment, is the use of large components such as rear light strips. On the one hand, these involve three-dimensional geometries, which in turn means not only horizontal, but also vertical and diagonal surfaces need to be wetted during the application process. This requires optimum coordination of flow characteristics and stability. Since these light strips often extend across the entire width of the vehicle, pot life and reactivity also play a greater role. Bead lengths of more than 2 metres result in longer application times. In order to wet both housing sections well, the open time of the system must be adjusted accordingly; rapid curing can then follow to minimise the holding times and ensure efficient production.

                  More power for supercapacitors – with the aid of Wevo potting compounds

                  Due to the ongoing advancement and growth of hybridization and electrification, energy storage is now a significant and innovative area of development. In areas where large amounts of energy need to be delivered at short notice, supercapacitors offer decisive advantages over conventional electrolytic capacitors and metal hybrid or li-ion batteries. By using potting compounds from WEVO-CHEMIE GmbH, capacitor manufacturer WIMA GmbH & Co. KG not only benefits from a high degree of flexibility in the design and production of its supercapacitor packs and modules, but is also able to significantly improve their performance. The optimized thermal conductivity of the potting compound allows an increase in electrical capacity without leaving the optimum temperature range – this also results in a longer service life. 

                   

                  DETAIL

                  As short-term storage devices in hybrid cars, supercapacitors increase their efficiency; in buses or trains, they use the energy generated during braking for propulsion; and in the event of power failures, they can provide the very high amounts of energy needed immediately. The uses for supercapacitors – also known as supercaps or ultracapacitors – are already diverse, and these components are becoming more and more important. This is because they are filling the gap between conventional capacitors and storage batteries, i.e. rechargeable batteries.

                  On the one hand, supercapacitors can store extremely large amounts of energy and charge – more precisely, 10 to 100 times as much as electrolytic capacitors. On the other hand, contrary to rechargeable batteries, this energy is charged or discharged in a flash when required. This is thanks to the fundamentally different way in which they store energy: while rechargeable batteries store energy by electrochemical means, and consequently, charging and discharging is relatively slow, storage in capacitors takes place directly as an electrical charge. Supercapacitors can therefore be used wherever large amounts of energy need to be discharged at short notice. 

                  BENEFITS FROM USING WEVO POTTING COMPOUNDS IN THE PRODUCTION OF WIMA POWERBLOCKS

                  WIMA, a leading German specialist in film capacitors, uses these benefits in the so called supercapacitor “PowerBlock” – cascaded, double-layer capacitor modules whose capacitance, rated voltage and dimensions can be individually adapted to the respective application. This allows a wide range of applications, for example in the mobility sector, for engine starter modules in large construction and agricultural machinery, ships, locomotives, trams and buses, and for applications in the energy sector, such as slip controls for wind turbines or generators in emergency power systems.
                   
                  The individual supercap cells of the PowerBlock are fixed symmetrically to the base and at the lid of the housing with the help of Wevo’s WEVOPUR 512 FL potting compound. This facilitates customisation of the construction and innovative design of the PowerBlock. The polyurethane resin functions as a cell holder, which previously had to be manufactured and adapted to the construction form of the cells separately. In addition, the cells are protected from shocks, oscillations and vibrations due to the tough mechanical properties of the potting compound. 

                  SAFETY AND INCREASED PERFORMANCE WITH THE AID OF WEVO POTTING COMPOUNDS

                  Furthermore, the cells are bonded directly to the metal surfaces of the housing. The direct encapsulation allows the thermal surface resistance to be minimized and the thermal conductivity of 0.8 W/mK to be optimally used to dissipate the thermal energy during operation. At the same time, electrical insulation is provided between the cells and the metal housing. The good dissipation of thermal energy lowers the operating temperature, prolongs the service life and ensures low-maintenance operation with up to one million charge and discharge cycles. With the high charges and energy levels of up to several thousand watts that can be delivered for short periods, electrical safety is ensured by the high tracking resistance, surface resistance and dielectric strength in the PowerBlock. In addition, the potting compound is self-extinguishing in line with UL 94 V-0 and certified according to railway fire protection standard EN 45545-2. As a result, it reduces the risk of fire and protects the PowerBlock against what is known as “thermal runaway”.

                          Temperature-resistant and flame-retardant: new Wevo materials with high UL ratings

                          Whether sensors, power electronics or transformers – lots of electrical and electronic components are exposed to high temperatures. This poses genuine challenges for the materials used, as they must not only be temperature-resistant, but also flame-resistant or self-extinguishing in the event of a fire. Several Wevo products have now been granted UL approvals and combine unusually high temperature resistance together with flame-retardant properties and high thermal conductivity. Wevo will be presenting details of these UL-approved products on Thursday, 15 April, at 3 p.m. (CET) in a webinar hosted by United Laboratories entitled “Fire-retardant polyurethane, epoxy and silicone resins for protecting and insulating E&E components”.

                           

                           

                          DETAIL

                          Increasing technical demands in terms of operating safety, higher energy density and therefore higher heat resistance combined with a decreased risk of fire are driving the electronic and electrical industry. Megatrends such as e-mobility, energy storage and smart grids require modern polymeric insulation materials. In the field of flame-retardant applications, approvals given by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) are considered a global and cross-industry prerequisite when it comes to selecting materials – the US organisation is known for its high standards with regard to ensuring product safety.

                          Wevo has sent a number of its potting compounds – some of which are totally new developed products – to UL for certification. The result: several of our flame-retardant polyurethanes have received RTI (Relative Temperature Index) approval, and one highly temperature-resistant epoxy resin has been certified to UL 94 V-0.

                          RTI certification refers to long-term temperature resistance. In the case of polyurethanes, this is usually a maximum of 130 °C, which corresponds to insulation class B – insulation classes are a system defined by international standards used to classify the maximum operating temperature of materials. For some time now, Wevo’s product range has included polyurethane potting compounds that exceed the RTI of 130 °C, among them WEVOPUR 403 FL with a certified RTI of 155 °C (insulation class F = min. 155 °C). However, the development of polyurethanes with such high temperature resistance requires a great deal of effort, which is why such products have to date been thin on the ground.

                          WEVO POTTING RESIN: EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH RTI

                          Wevo is now gradually filling this gap in order to meet the demand for such products from the marketplace. Among the latest products to receive UL certification is WEVOPUR 60416 FL. The extensive testing programme the product was put through lasted more than 12 months and confirmed an RTI of 160 °C – an unusually high value rarely achieved with polyurethanes. In addition, WEVOPUR 60416 FL has a high thermal conductivity of 1.6 W/mK. Together with the very high temperature resistance, this results in the advantage that even at high ambient temperatures more heat can be permanently dissipated from the stressed components. This can then be useful, for example, in pottings of stators of electric motors as well as inductive components such as chokes or transformers for electrical applications. 

                          In addition to temperature resistance, the product’s flame-retardant properties also play an important role for many users with applications in areas with high temperature exposure. If UL certification in accordance with the UL 94 standard is required, this means, that the materials must be fire-resistant and rapidly self-extinguishing in order to delay or even prevent the spread of fire. The combination of flame retardancy and very high temperature resistance is extremely difficult to achieve as many additives used to achieve flame retardancy reduce a material’s long-term temperature resistance. This poses a particular challenge to the development of epoxy resins – which can achieve very high temperature resistance thanks to their chemical composition – as it becomes increasingly difficult to achieve robust flame retardancy at higher application temperatures of up to insulation class H (180 °C).

                          COMBINATION OF HIGH FLAME RETARDENCY AND TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE 

                          Wevo has succeeded in developing a highly resistant epoxy resin potting compound with high flame retardancy – while at the same time not using any halogenated flame retardants at all. WEVOPOX 36001 FL, in combination with the hardener WEVODUR 5001, has been certified to UL 94 V-0 for an application thickness of 2 mm. This means that the material burns for only a very short time after two flaming cycles and does not drip. As a special feature, the solution is the first epoxy resin from Wevo to offer temperature resistance up to 180 °C (insulation class H) combined with UL 94 V-0 approval.

                          The new polyurethane- and epoxy-based Wevo solutions are therefore suitable for use in electrical and electronic components that are operated continuously at higher temperatures and require flame retardancy. These include transformers, chokes, current and other sensors for electrical applications, power electronics components such as charging plugs, on-board chargers and electric motors for e-mobility and for automotive electronics in general.

                                      Clean drinking water is one of the most precious resources on the planet. For this very reason, the specifications for materials that come into contact with it are extremely stringent. A two-component potting compound from WEVO-CHEMIE GmbH has now been granted drinking water approval by the internationally recognised Water Regulations Advisory Scheme Ltd. (WRAS) and can therefore be used in the production of drinking water filters and for protecting electrical and electronic components used in the fields of drinking and process water.

                                      According to Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, each individual in the country consumes around 123 litres of water per day. Maintaining a consistently high-quality water supply is essential and is ensured by carrying out analysis. One of the requirements for materials deployed in the drinking water sector is that they must not alter the drinking water in any way, for example, by contaminating it or changing its smell or taste.

                                      Wevo submitted a two-component, polyurethane-based potting resin for auditing according to the stringent WRAS test procedure. Among other things, the organisation promotes regulations for keeping the UK’s drinking water clean and checks compliance with them. During the evaluation of materials, special focus is placed on the possible release of heavy metals, changes in the taste and smell of the water samples and the prevention of harmful effects on cellular and aquatic organisms.

                                      The polyurethane potting resin made of WEVOPUR 2082 and the hardener WEVONAT 1000 has passed the rigorous tests and is now certified in accordance with BS 6920-1:2000/2014. As a result, the product can be used to manufacture drinking water filters and to protect electrical and electronic components that are in constant contact with drinking water at temperatures of up to 23 °C. Potential applications in the areas of drinking water management and filtration alongside conventional water filters include flow sensors, pump housings and control panels. Other potential application areas are systems and filters for treating process water, such as those used in power stations, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, in breweries and in the production of juice and wine.


                                      ADVANTAGES IN PROCESSING AND USE THANKS TO WEVO POTTING RESIN

                                      Compared to the epoxy resins frequently used in the drinking water sector, this polyurethane potting compound offers a range of advantages in processing. The heat generated during processing is less, allowing potting to be carried out in one step without any interruption, also when potting larger volumes. This process is also void-free and safe – even with complex geometries – thanks to the relatively low viscosity of Wevo’s material. The aligned flow properties and good adhesion also ensure perfect wetting of the filter medium and excellent bonding to a wide variety of substrates. This allows filters based on ceramic materials or polymers such as polyether sulphone or PVDF to be reliably potted and bonded.

                                      The formulation of the Wevo potting resin consists of particularly pure raw materials, which are formulated in such a way that no volatile components are released. The product also combines high mechanical strength with a certain flexibility, making the material less brittle in use than a comparable epoxy resin. In addition, WEVOPUR 2082, together with the hardener WEVONAT 1000, provides excellent resistance to the cleaning and rinsing agents commonly used in water treatment systems.

                                          Redox flow batteries – new possibilities with Wevo materials

                                          Redox flow batteries are elaborately constructed wet-cell batteries in which electrolytes, often based on vanadium, are circulated by means of pumps. The technology is seen as having great potential as a storage system for renewable energy from solar photovoltaic and wind farms or rooftop systems. However, the design of the battery stacks has been a real challenge so far as the aggressive electrolytes may cause stress on the materials.

                                          Potting and sealing compounds from Wevo can withstand these conditions – as demonstrated by a series of tests conducted by the company in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT) in Pfinztal, Germany. As a result, the tested polyurethane-, epoxy- and silicone-based Wevo resins and adhesives permit the battery stacks to be designed with greater freedom and make an important contribution toward the technology becoming fit for mass application. At the “2021 International Flow Battery Forum”, WEVO-CHEMIE GmbH presented the results in detail.

                                          The increasing use of renewables means that more and more electricity being generated – whether by large wind and solar farms or by small and medium-sized privately owned PV installations – has to be temporarily stored decentralized. Since the lithium-ion batteries frequently used for this purpose suffer from a number of disadvantages – among other things with respect to the storage of energy over longer periods of time or decreasing storage capacities at low temperatures or over the course of use – alternative technologies are being sought. What are known as “redox flow batteries” or wet-cell batteries are already in use.

                                          Although their installation is more complicated as it involves manual work, they nevertheless enjoy a range of advantages over lithium-ion batteries that are particularly positive when it comes to the large-scale storage of electricity generated by wind or solar parks. On the one hand, their power and capacity can be scaled independently. What’s more, the technology is safe because the electrolyte they contain cannot catch fire or explode. A “thermal runaway”, i.e. overheating, can also be ruled out. Furthermore, the batteries usually have a long service life of 15 to 20 years and can be easily recycled later, because recovery and reprocessing of the active substances they contain are readily feasible.

                                          WEVO PRODUCTS PASS THE ENDURANCE TEST

                                          In cooperation with the Fraunhofer ICT, Wevo has tested the resistance of selected 2-component reaction resins based on polyurethane, epoxy and silicone in a sulphuric acid electrolyte containing vanadium. To this end, the research team stored the respective test samples for 135 days in different oxidation levels, including the especially aggressive V5+ level.

                                          At the end of this period, the condition of the test samples was examined to determine any changes in Shore hardness, weight and surface. The latter was done with the aid of a light microscope. In addition, the transparency and colour of the electrolytes were also evaluated. The findings: neither the test samples nor the electrolytes showed any significant changes. The materials tested can therefore be considered to be resistant in the highly aggressive sulphuric acid electrolyte and vanadium in the various oxidation levels.

                                          WEVOSIL 28001, WEVOPUR 9064 B/30 with WEVONAT 507 and WEVOPOX 32703 with WEVODUR 5009 can be used in redox flow batteries in different ways. By using them as sealing and bonding materials, they can replace the rubber and silicone seals that have been used up to now. This creates more freedom in the design of the battery stacks. In addition, they seal the bipolar membranes inside the battery securely and positively and thus protect the components and connecting bars against corrosion. In case of a complete encapsulation of the battery stack the technology is a safe option for home storage applications too, as the user is protected from the corrosive electrolyte.

                                                    Wevo’s New Appearance Receives Three Awards from Renowned Institutes this Year.

                                                    The corporate design received the Silver ‘Annual Multimedia Design Award 2017’. Since 1996 this prize is awarded by an independent jury whose expertise lies in state of the art multimedia-design and digital markteting.
                                                     
                                                    The new website including the entirely new appearance of Wevo was honored by the German Designer Club (DDC) in the category ‘Good Design 17’. The DDC is a leading German Institute for interdisciplinary design.
                                                     
                                                    Projekttriangle Design Studio in Stuttgart was responsible for developing and implementing this new corporate design and website. Part of the new Wevo appearance includes a new distinctive Wevo font (Wevo Corporate Typeface), a new logo, spacial communication and signage. The corporate design has already been implemented at exhibitions and in all classical print and online marketing media.
